Dr. William Compton
1833-1878




Dr. William Compton was born 4 Aug 1833 in Madisonville KY and died 3 Oct 1878 of yellow fever on his plantation near Holly Springs. Dr. Compton was the first known physician in Marshall County MS. Dr. Compton served in the Civil War as a staff surgeon and performed a successful hip-joint amputation.  He was elected to the 1865 and 1868 constitutional conventions. He was then appointed Superintendent of the State Insane Asylum in 1870 and served two years then returned to Marshall County. He died of yellow fever prior to completing a private asylum he was building. (Note: An article in the Holly Springs Occasional stated that Dr. Compton died 24 Oct 1878.)
